Perrysburg Students Learn About Alternative Energy

Solar, wind, biofuel and zero energy home construction opportunities have been gaining momentum over the past few years and the young people who will ultimately further develop and most benefit from these technologies learned more about them during an alternative energy tour Friday, May 11, 2007 beginning at 8:15 a.m.

More than 100 fifth and sixth grade students from Perrysburg visited Bowling Green’s four wind turbines, explored newly constructed energy-efficient Decker Homes in Deer Valley, and spoke with University of Toledo Professor Al Compaan how the sun powers his home and his electric truck.

“These students are now studying energy efficiency and renewables in class and northwest Ohio is full of examples where we can get out of the classroom and see these new technologies in action,” said Perrysburg teacher Annette Sipp, who coordinated the experience with UT’s Urban Affairs Center Project Manager and local alternative energy expert Joe Perlaky.

“Reaching out to our youth is important both to the university and to the alternative energy community in the area,” said Perlaky past program manager for UT’s alternative energy systems grant. “These students will be the ones who build on the foundation that we have now and will perfect these technologies and develop new ones. Right now is when we have to grab their imaginations.”

During the first weekend of October, Green Energy Ohio will again sponsor Ohio’s solar and wind tours. In addition, they are bringing the national 2007 Solar Tour to Cleveland this July.
