Handling ICPSR Files

* Unpacking compressed files: ICPSR datasets and associated files are typically downloaded in a compressed format called Zip. You must either use an operating system that understands the Zip format natively, or have a utility program that can unpack the Zip file. Users of Windows XP, Linux, and Mac OS X can unpack Zip-formatted files directly; other systems will need additional utilities. See this ICPSR page for more information.
Further, ICPSR documentation and codebooks often come in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format; PDF's require a reader program, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Ghostview.
