The new book by the UAC Press,
What A Time It Was,
a book based on some of the Veterans’ History Project interviews that are archived in the Ward M. Canaday Center
of The University of Toledo’s Carlson Library, was highlighted in the
November 9, 2009 issue of UT News and in the
November 11, 2009 issue of the Toledo Blade.

UAC Director Dr. Neil Reid was part of a collaborative group of BGSU and University of Toledo
researchers that was recognized recently for taking a fresh approach to determining the most promising
sites in Ohio for production of the giant windmills.

July 9 issue of the Toledo City Paper.
This article mentioned a UAC-sponsored study conducted by UT assistant professor Gbenga Ajilore
on the impact to the Lucas County economy of a local merchant.

During his recent trip to Australia to share his knowldege of economic clusters, UAC Director Dr. Neil Reid
visited the University of Western Sydney to discuss cluster development with local growers. His presentation was featured in the
August 5, 2009 issue of the Hawkesbury Gazette.

July 7 2009 issue of UT News.
- UAC Director Dr. Neil Reid and Maumee Valley Growers Project Manager Joe Perlaky were featured in a segment on
WGTE TV's "Plugged In" series that discussed how the Maumee Valley Growers, part of UAC's
Northwest Ohio Economic Research Collaborative,
are changing their "flower power" by adopting green energy practices.

- UAC's Downtown Toledo Tours were profiled in the Spring 2009 issue of UT's
Alumni Magazine.
- UAC Director Dr. Neil Reid, Associate Professor of Geography & Planning, was the recipient
of UT's Outstanding Researcher Award for 2009. Dr. Reid's work as an internationally recognized
authority on cluster-based economics (which emphasizes collaboration between business, academia, and the community)
was cited as the main reason for the award.

Yell & Tell, an organization dedicated to preventing
child abuse through education. Yell & Tell's recent April 2009 rally was the focus of a Toledo Blade article on
April 6, 2009.

Dr. Neil Reid, Associate Professor of Geography and Planning and Director of
the Urban Affairs Center at the University of Toledo, recently received a
Distinguished Service Award from the Planning and Regional Development
Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG). Reid’s award
was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to scholarship in the area
of cluster-based economic development.

The Maumee Valley Growers
were profiled in the
March 2009 issue of Country Grower Midwest in an article
highlighting how the growers "collaborate to compete".
- UAC Research Associate Paula Ross has contributed a great deal of time
and effort to the Toledo Farmers Market. On January 27, 2009 she was
recognized for "community service dedicated to the Farmers Market" at their
fourth annual meeting.
- As the the Toledo Blade article of December 7, 2008, says, "Mark the date: It's time for a Toledo calendar", and the
Maumee Valley Growers' 2009 Calendar is prominently featured in their review of local calendars.
- The 2007 UAC-funded study of a City of Sylvania - Sylvania Township merger
prompted perhaps the last article for a while in the Toledo Blade on Thursday, November 13, 2008
in which the results of the November 5th general election vote was discussed.
- The 2007 UAC-funded study of a City of Sylvania - Sylvania Township merger
was cited in a Toledo Blade article on November 5, 2008
that reported the results of the election issue in which
voters in Sylvania Township rejected the idea of exploring a merger with the city of Sylvania, voting overwhelmingly against the formation of a merger commission.
- On Saturday, October 4, 2008, The Toledo Blade reported that Sylvania Township trustees voted unanimously against a November ballot
issue that would form a commission to develop a plan to merge the township with
the city of Sylvania. In March 2007, UAC performed a study of
the proposed merger between the two.
- UAC Research Associate Paula Ross was quoted in the Toledo Blade issue of September 7, 2008 regarding efforts to encourage those on food stamps
to take advantage of the values offered at the Toledo Farmers Market.
- UAC's contribution to the local quality of life was noted in the September 2008 section of the UT Matters web site.
- UAC Director Dr. Neil Reid was quoted in a Toledo Blade article that discussed the state of public transportation regionally, as well as efforts to revive it, on August 12, 2008.
- UAC hosted a group of Toledo and Lucas County officials, neighborhood groups, housing advocates, and others to discuss what to do about the vacant
homes that blight a host of neighborhoods in our area, as reported in the July 19 edtion of the Toledo Blade.
- UAC Research Associate Paula Ross is a founding member of Slow Food Maumee Valley, which organization
was profiled in the Toledo Blade on July 15, 2008 on its first anniversary.
- UAC Research Associate Paula Ross (UT MBA '86) was profiled online in by the UT Alumni Association,
highlighting her work at UAC "with Maumee Valley Growers, a nonprofit association of regional growers, assisting them in making the local economy bloom."

- UAC Research Associate Dr. Hugh Hinton recently completed a
comprehensive analysis of the financial impacts of a potential merger between Mongomery County's Washington Township and Centerville City in Montgomery County, Ohio.

- The Maumee Valley Growers web site has been refreshed with new content and more information
about the Growers.
The MVG are also co-sponsoring a new locally produced environmental education program: EcoTrack 11.
- The Maumee Valley Growers and Bostdorffs Greenhouse of Bowling Green hosted a pointsettia judging event that was
covered by Toledo's 13ABC TV.
- UAC Director Neil Reid presented his analysis of possible local industry clusters to a
who's who of Northwest Ohio's economic development community as they met Nov. 30, 2007 at the
Dana Conference Center to identify opportunities for coordination and collaboration
among their organizations. This meeting was covered by the
Toledo Free Press in their December 7, 2007 issue.
- UAC Assistant Director Sue Wuest attended the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago
(the world's largest conference of building industry manufacturers and designers with an interest in energy-efficient, sustainable structures)
and was quoted in the November 13, 2007 edition of The Oregonian.
- The Maumee Valley Growers will be part of the Maumee Uptown Business Association's 2007 Halloween festivities
from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., where they'll hand out pumpkins and discount coupons for locally grown flowers and plants.

- UAC Director Neil Reid and Assistant Director Sue Wuest appeared on Toledo's NBC affiliate station, NBC24, as part of an
October 8, 2007 story citing
Toledo's nomination by a United Nations committee to a list of 5 cities competing internationally for the title of “Most Livable
City”.
- The collaboration agreement between UAC and BGSU's Center for Regional Development and its positive effects was noted in an article in the
June 22, 2007 issue of the Toledo Free Press.
- UAC Research Assistant Anastasia Mirzoyants is active in tutor/mentor leadership and recently co-hosted a workshop at the
2007 Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference in Chicago. Her participation
was noted in the Tutor/Mentor Connection Blog entry of Tuesday, June 7, 2007 and she wrote an article
for that blog on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.
- The work of UAC's former director, the late Dr. Patrick McGuire,
on the subject of “brain drain” as it relates to our area was profiled by the Toledo Blade
on Sunday, June 3, 2007.
- According to a recent study released by the Brookings Institution that was discussed in a
Toledo Blade article on May 26, 2007, “Toledo could experience an economic revival if their state
governments adjust some public policies”. UAC Director Neil Reid and Assistant Director Sue Wuest were both
quoted in this article, and Dr. Reid was quoted in a Blade editorial on May 31, 2007 on the same topic.
- UAC was mentioned in an article in the Toledo Blade on Friday, May 11, 2007 that reported the Toledo City Council's
discussion of a possible connection between convenience stores and crime.
- The discussion of a possible City of Sylvania - Sylvania Township merger continued on March 2, 2007 at a public forum covered by the Toledo Blade.
- The analysis of possible financial impacts of a proposed Sylvania Township - City of Sylvania merger
by the Urban Affairs Center has been discussed at public meetings that were covered by the Toledo Blade on
February 8, 2007 (Reactions Mixed for Merger Plans and
Study Finds Tax Benefits), and on February 15, 2007
(Sylvania-Area Residents Mull Merger).
- In an article published on February 1, 2007, the Toledo Blade highlighted a
public meeting to be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2007
that will discuss the results of a study performed by the UAC that examined
the financial aspects of a possible merger between Sylvania Township and the
City of Sylvania.
- Toledo Local Initiatives Support Corporation awarded its largest grant ever - $200,000 - to a project called "Connecting the Pieces"
aiming to improve neighborhoods adjacent to the Marina District. The UAC is one of the project's key players,
according to the January 7, 2007 article in the Toledo Free Press.
