According to the Toledo Blade, a study co-sponsored by the UAC and the University of Cincinnati's Institute for Community Partnerships "that focuses on public K-16 educational institutions in Toledo and Cincinnati shows that people of color from low-income urban areas are facing serious and ongoing problems when it comes to getting an education." The release of the latest UAC Press book, The Irish in Toledo: History and Memory, was noted by the Toledo Blade on Sunday, March 13, 2005, and by UT News on March 14, 2005.
A recent study sponsored by UAC finds that "there is a major disconnect at many area companies between a desire for a sophisticated information technology system and a willingness to buy needed software and properly train employees". According to the Toledo Blade, "The cost of filing civil claims, evictions, driver's license suspension appeals, and garnishments in Toledo Municipal Court has risen to make Toledo's costs comparable with other jurisdictions". This action was taken in part as a result of an April 2004 study sponsored by the UAC. You can read the January 10, 2005 Blade article documenting this decision here.
The City of Toledo has reached a decision about its 2005 budget that avoids layoffs of key personnel, as reported by the Toledo Blade on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 and in an editorial on Monday, December 27, 2004. This result was in part attributed to the City's acceptance of its revenue forecast for 2005 by Dr. Paul Kozlowski, UAC Research Associate.
The Toledo Blade highighted the City of Toledo's budget woes regarding its capital improvements program in a December 17, 2004 article. UAC Research Associate Dr. Paul Kozlowski's forecasts of City income tax revenues was noted in this article (his latest forecast can be read here).
Toledo Blade columnist Roberta DeBoer has a novel suggestion for Toledo's economic woes: print your own money! Her December 12, 2004 column cites a recent UAC study on the effects of buying locally.
Dr. Neil Reed and Dr. Michael Carroll, UAC Research Associates working on the Northwest Ohio Economic Research Collaborative, visited the Wolverhampton region of England meeting with business and academic leaders to learn from their experiences with industrial clusters. This four day visit was noted in UTNews on November 12, 2004.
A press conference discussing the UAC-funded study on domestic violence recidivism was covered by the Toledo Blade on Saturday, October 23, 2004. The study was also covered by UTNews on December 6, 2004.
UAC Research Associate Donna Johnston (chairman of the Metro Toledo Smart Growth Partnership) coordinated a meeting that invited leaders of 14 cities and villages in Lucas and Wood counties, as well as city officials from Monroe, Michigan, to discuss the issues raised by population moving outward from urban centers to the suburbs. The Toledo Blade discussed these issues and quoted Ms. Johnston in an article on Sunday, September 26, 2004, and The Blade wrote a follow-up article about the meeting's results on Thursday, September 20, 2004.

An Urban Affairs Center study of the economic impact of local business on the economy was reported by UT News on September 7, 2004.
UAC Research Associate Sue Wuest chaired a meeting of a group called "Friends of the Market" that wants to assist the Erie Street Market. This meeting was covered by The Toledo Blade on July 27, 2004.

UAC Research Associate Sue Wuest attended a day-long regional hearing on in Monclova Township (sponsored by the state House of Representatives' subcommittee on land use and growth) that discussed the idea of regional sharing of taxes from metropolitan growth. This hearing was covered by The Toledo Blade on March 25, 2004.
UAC Research Associates Sue Wuest, Dr, Neil Reid of UT, and Dr. Michael Carroll of BGSU were featured in an article in the March 15, 2004 issue of UTNews that discussed the Northwest Ohio Economic Research Collaborative.
UAC Research Associate Joel Lipman, UT Professor of art and English, composed an editorial on the February 23, 2004 issue of UT News in which he lamented the passing of Westgate Shopping Center's Boogie Records and cites UAC's leadership in the Westgate commercial district.

UAC Director Dr. Patrick McGuire was quoted in a Toledo Blade article on January 4, 2004, that reviewed the results of U.S. Census "long form" data indicating that a significant precentage of those who work in Toledo live there. Dr. McGuire was also cited on January 13, 2004, in the Blade's editorial opinion on that issue.

CATNeT and Director Anne Robinson received national recognition: the first Education Think Tank TEC Champion Award for Outstanding Community Technology Leaders from the Community Technology Centers Network during a recent ceremony at the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. UT News covered the story on October 20, 2003.

The study of the fiscal impact of public service delivery practices in Lucas County, Ohio garnered an editorial opinion from the Toledo Blade on the effects of those practices. A proposal from Lucas County Engineer Keith Earley could bridge a tax gap said to exist between the municipalities and townships of Lucas County (Toledo Blade article, October 11, 2002).

The Select Committee on Ohio’s System of Higher Education met on August 13, 2002, at the UT College of Law, and UAC was mentioned prominently by Jack Ford, Mayor of the City of Toledo (article by the Toledo Blade).
UT News documented a $30,000 gift from Key Bank to CATNeT, the UAC program offering access to computers and technology. The July 2002 issue of Commercial Advantage also covered the donation. The June 25, 2002 event was held at Michaelmas Manor, a CATNeT computing center.
An article in The Toledo Blade on July 1, 2002, dealt with the cuts in funding by the State of Ohio to the voucher program implemented by Lucas County's Department of Jobs and Family Services, a program that was "deemed effective by a study this year by the University of Toledo’s Urban Affairs Center and Lucas County Human Services" according to the Blade article.
UAC is partnering with U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, Toledo City Council, and other local groups to fund a study of urban sprawl and identify its effects in the Toledo area to be conducted by The Metropolitan Area Research Corporation, a non-profit group directed by Myron Orfield (Toledo Blade article, June 27, 2002).
Dr. Dale Dwyer, chair and professor of management in UT's College of Business Administration and a UAC research associate, published the results of her study of the future of jobs in Northwest Ohio (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). This study was covered by the June 21, 2002 issue of the The Blade and on the web by UT News.
UAC Research Associate Sue Wuest, co-chair of Toledo Mayor Jack Ford's Transition Team, participated in the creation of Mayor Ford's plan for the City of Toledo. She was present at Mayor Ford's announcement of the plan (as reported in the Toledo City Paper, May 30 - June 5).

UAC is co-sponsoring (with the UT Finance and Business Economics Dept, UT Center for Family Business, UT Exective MBA program) a luncheon talk by Tom Klier, of the Chicago Federal Researce Bank. He will talk about the problems of second and third tier auto suppliers in a presentation entitled "Geography in Today's Changing Automobile Industry." The talk will be held in the UT Student Union Room 2582.
