International Economic Development Council

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to helping economic developers do their job more effectively and raising the profile of the profession. When we succeed, our members create more high-quality jobs, develop more vibrant communities, and generally improve the quality of life in their regions.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation

Chartered by Congress in 1949, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable. It fights to save historic buildings and the neighborhoods and landscapes they anchor. Through education and advocacy, the National Trust is revitalizing communities across the country and challenges citizens to create sensible plans for the future. It has six regional offices, 20 historic sites, and works with thousands of local community groups nationwide. Ever since it was founded in 1949, the National Trust has shown how preservation can play an important role in strengthening a sense of community and improving the quality of life.

Center for Neighborhood Technology

"Making Cities Work" -- The Center promotes public policies, new resources and accountable authority, which support sustainable, just and vital urban communities. CNT'S commitment is to work with others to bring home the benefits of sustainable development to Chicago neighborhoods.

Coalition for Healthier Cities and Communities

Contains "the community tool box". These "how-to" sections explain how to do the tasks that can increase the effectiveness of your community work. For example, you will find sections on strategic planning, advocacy, leadership development, grant writing, and evaluation, to mention just a few.

Civic Practices Network

Civic Practices Network (CPN) is a collaborative and nonpartisan project bringing together a diverse array of organizations and perspectives within the new citizenship movement.

National Civic League

NCL is an advocacy organization vigorously promoting the principles of collaborative problem-solving and consensus- based decision making in local community building.  NCL accomplishes its mission through technical assistance, training, publishing, research, and an awards program.

Association for Community Design

The national Association for Community Design Inc. (ACD) is a membership organization composed of people who have formed centers dedicated to a development practice with the capacity to combat policies that contribute to the persistence of poverty.

Pratt Institute Center for Community and Environmental Development (PICCED)

The mission of the Pratt Center is to use the professional skills  of architects and planners to work for social and economic justice by providing low- and moderate-income communities with access to the tools and resources needed to meet the challenges they face in planning and implementing their future.

National Housing Institute

The National Housing Institute is an independent nonprofit organization that examines the issues causing the crisis in housing and community in America. These issues include poverty and racism, disinvestment and lack of employment, safety, education, and breakdown of the social fabric. NHI examines how these and other factors effect people as they try to build safe and viable neighborhoods. NHI has performed original research on such topics as saving subsidized housing, homelessness prevention, and creating jobs as a component of affordable housing construction.
